What’s New with Symmetry GUEST/CONNECT in October

Version 2.8.10 of Symmetry GUEST, CONNECT and IDM adds 2 new features, 1 enhancement and 39 fixes. The headline change is Access Group Deletion Management, a safeguard that makes sure CONNECT never removes access groups until an administrator has reviewed the impact.

New Features & Enhancements

  1. Access Group Deletion Management

When an access control system reports that an access group no longer exists, CONNECT no longer deletes it on the spot. The deletion now waits for an administrator to review it, with a clear count of how many access assignments would be lost. This protects against a system that reports its groups incorrectly, for example after a database restore or when it answers with an empty list, from silently wiping out access groups and everyone’s access to them.

  • Nothing is removed without a decision: a reported deletion is recorded and held. If nobody holds the access group, it is applied automatically and written to the record. If anyone holds it, it waits for review.
  • Impact shown up front: each waiting deletion shows how many access assignments it carries, and a row expands in place to name the people who would lose access.
  • Confirm or keep: administrators confirm the deletion, or keep the access group, which preserves it and everyone’s access. Several rows can be decided together, and the count is re-checked at the moment a deletion is applied.
  • Three tabs: Awaiting review, Retained (groups you chose to keep, which can still be removed later by an administrator) and History (one entry per applied deletion, showing how it ended).
  • Self-clearing: if the access group reappears on site, the waiting request clears itself.
  • Per-system context: a banner for each reporting system shows how many groups it reported deleted, how many assignments they carry and when it last reported, so you can tell a reporting problem from a real deletion.

2. Stronger Document Authentication with Infrared and Ultraviolet Scans

Hardware ID scanners that capture infrared (IR) and ultraviolet (UV) images of a document now pass those images to AcuPixel’s forensic validation, alongside the standard front, back and selfie images. IR and UV imagery shows the security features built into physical IDs, giving the forensic engine more to work with when checking whether a document is genuine.

  • Uses images already captured: IR and UV frames from supported scanners were previously stored but never used. They are now included in the AcuPixel validation request.
  • No change for other scans: scans without IR or UV images, such as webcam scans or scanners that do not produce them, validate exactly as before.
  • No extra hardware: the improvement comes from scanners customers already own.

Where to find it  Navigation: Symmetry GUEST > Advanced ID Scanning. There is no new screen; the change applies automatically to scans from IR/UV-capable scanners.

Note: the source ticket lists open questions about AcuPixel tier enablement, whether the images change the existing authenticity score and any per-scan billing. Confirm these with the product owner before this item is published or used in sales conversations.

3. Manager Auto-Approval for Requests on Behalf of Direct Reports

When a manager who is an approver in the Credential Request or Access Request workflow submits a request on behalf of one of their direct reports, their own approval step is now approved automatically and logged as such. Managers no longer have to approve their own requests.

  • Applies to both workflows: Credential Request and Access Request.
  • Logged: the automatic approval is recorded so it can be distinguished from a manual one.
  • Multi-level managers: the behaviour is tested for managers at more than one level of the reporting chain.

Where to find it  Navigation: applies within the Credential Request and Access Request approval workflows. The exact configuration path was not stated in the source tickets.

Note: the source ticket carried minimal detail beyond a test plan. Please confirm the navigation path and wording before publishing.

Bug Fixes & Reliability

The following issues were resolved in this release, grouped by application.

Area Fix
Symmetry CONNECT Select All no longer stays switched on after you change a filter and more people appear in the list, and “Select All Identities that Match” now applies only to the people you intended.
Symmetry CONNECT After starting a bulk access grant and then cancelling it, granting access from a single row now applies only to that person instead of everyone who matched.
Symmetry CONNECT The camera now switches off when you close the photo window or leave Upload Photo, and a blank photo can no longer be saved.
Symmetry CONNECT Photo cropping on the Credential Request page now works correctly.
Symmetry CONNECT The Card Activity Report no longer times out when you filter by Access Group Building.
Symmetry CONNECT The Reports page now opens much faster for customers running PostgreSQL with a large history of audit records.
Symmetry CONNECT My Groups no longer times out for organizations with very large numbers of users.
Symmetry CONNECT Changes to access rules now update every matching person, as expected.
Symmetry CONNECT An access group is no longer added automatically to a person after they have been terminated.
Symmetry CONNECT The list of approved facility codes no longer resets when you change General configuration settings.
Symmetry CONNECT When third-party sign-in is bypassed, you are no longer incorrectly asked for a password.
Symmetry CONNECT Pressing Refresh several times in a row no longer displays an error message.
Symmetry CONNECT The Complete Identity Report now includes each person’s manager, and duplicate Identity Reference Numbers are handled correctly.
Symmetry CONNECT User Defined Fields marked as Editable in Screen Configuration can now be edited on the Identity details page without having to re-save Screen Configuration first.
Symmetry CONNECT The Connect Light dashboard no longer shows an error when some data is missing or the dashboard can’t be reached.
Symmetry CONNECT Protected folders now require you to sign in, which restores Process Credential Request.
Symmetry CONNECT The activation code email is now sent when Symmetry is activated a second time.
Symmetry CONNECT Clear filters now also clears the Identity type filter.
Symmetry CONNECT Card Option and Format settings now stay consistent when more than one matching rule applies.
Symmetry CONNECT A single duplicate reader identifier no longer stops live reader status from showing for every group in Remote Access.
Symmetry IDM Delete All Terminated Identities now works for every group, including environments with more than 10,000 terminated identities.
Symmetry IDM Terminated identities now appear correctly in data retention.
Symmetry IDM Removing a termination lock now takes effect everywhere it applies.
Symmetry IDM Renaming a building or company now reliably updates search results.
Symmetry IDM Updating or removing a person’s manager or address no longer fails if that record has already been removed.
Symmetry IDM Problems with impersonation and photo batch imports now return a clear, accurate error message instead of a generic one.
Symmetry IDM Fewer background errors now occur when Symmetry looks up buildings and companies that have been deleted.
Symmetry GUEST A recurring visit can no longer be created with a date range that starts in the past.
Symmetry GUEST A recurring visit whose pattern produces no visits is no longer silently saved as an empty series.
Symmetry GUEST A weekly recurring visit is no longer wrongly blocked by a “start time can’t be in the past” message when the first visit is not today.
Symmetry GUEST Explicit Access Codes no longer appear on New Visit when the matching access rule doesn’t allow them.
Symmetry GUEST The Watchlist report no longer shows watchlist entries that have been deleted.
Symmetry GUEST Visit approvals, reminders and report updates no longer fail when a visit or approval isn’t available yet.
Symmetry GUEST Visitor lookups are faster on large databases.
Symmetry Public API Credential activation dates set through the Public API no longer shift because of time zone differences.
Symmetry Public API Manager lists returned by the Public API no longer contain duplicate entries.
Symmetry Public API Updating a credential through the Public API no longer overwrites its activation and expiration dates unintentionally.
Scan Utility The Scan Utility installer now includes the driver for the 850DX scanner, so scans no longer fail with a misleading “no document in scanner” message.
Platform Improved stability and performance when Symmetry is under heavy load processing identities and visitors.
